Las nominaciones para la 72ª edición de los Premios Emmy se anunciaron el martes 28 de julio de 2020.

Netflix ha establecido un récord por la mayor cantidad de nominaciones en un solo año, obteniendo un total de 160. HBO fue el anterior poseedor del récord con 137 en 2019.

La serie con más nominaciones fue ‘Watchmen’ de HBO con un total de 26, seguida por ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ de Amazon con 20. ‘Ozark’ de Netflix y ‘Succession’ de HBO cada una obtuvo 18, mientras que ‘The Mandalorian’ de Disney+, ‘Saturday Night Live’ de NBC y ‘Schitt’s Creek’ de Pop TV recibieron 15 nominaciones cada una.

Leslie Jones (Supermarket Sweep, SNL) fue la anfitriona del anuncio de nominaciones, junto con los presentadores Laverne Cox (Inventing Anna), Josh Gad (Central Park), Tatiana Maslany (Perry Mason) y el presidente y director ejecutivo de la Academia de Televisión, Frank Scherma. La ceremonia de este año se concibió como un evento virtual debido a las restricciones de producción derivadas de la pandemia de COVID-19.

La votación para las rondas finales de los Emmy comenzará el 21 de agosto y se llevará a cabo hasta el 31 de agosto.
